Infographic Hotel

For the calculation of hotel emissions, we use a hybrid method based on the HCMI standard of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance and the VDR standard. This is necessary because the methods are complementary and only in this way is data available for all regions of the world. The calculation includes Scope 1 and 2 emissions, i.e. self-produced and purchased energy, as well as some Scope 3 emissions, which are indirect emissions along the value chain. In future, other factors will be included that are not currently taken into account due to the lack of data. Detailed information on our calculation standard can be found here:

Total area of public space

This includes areas used for guest rooms, corridors, restaurants, lobby and further public areas.

Back of House

All areas relevant to the running of the hotel, but not accessible to guests like kitchen, office, personnel rooms, laundry, storage, garage etc.

Number and categories of rooms

A distinction is made according to size and category. Standard rooms have the lowest emissions, suites the highest, regardless of the number of people staying in the room.

Total area with air-conditioning

This includes all areas with heating, ventilation or air conditio-ning systems, including the lobby, restaurant, bar, spa, fitness centre, shops and others.

Occupancy figures

The total number of occupied rooms for reporting year is used as the basis for the calculation.

Emissions from refrigerant gases

Emissions are calculated based on the amount of refrigerants purchased per year for refrigerators, cold rooms, minibars etc.

Fuel for mobility services

The emissions of the hotel's own vehicle fleet, such as shuttle buses or vehicles travelling on the premises, are calculated based on the type and consumption of fuel.

Meeting space

The total area of meeting and event space.

Total energy consumption

A distinction is made here between energy sources, such as purchased or self-produced (e.g. through own solar or wind power) and energy type: renewable and/or fossil.

External laundry services

Many hotels outsource part or all of their laundry. This external energy consumption is included in order to make it easier to compare different hotels.
